Bangmata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall of Khulna University visited the sunflower field in the fallow land, Khulna District Deputy Director Agronomist Kazi Jahangir Hossain Sir, Directorate of Agricultural Extension, Khamarbari, Khulna. Agronomist Mr. Pankaj Kanti Majumder Sir (Retired) was also present. Agriculturalist Mr. Farhadiba Shams, Head of our Metropolitan Agriculture Office, Labanchara, Khulna was also present. The professors of the university were also present.

Farmer newton Mondal of  Dumuria upazilla became successful by cultivating taro. Mr. Newton’s taro farm is in Rangpur union under dumuria Upazilla of Khulna district. Once upon a time, Newton used to work as a laborer in jute mill of daulatpur region. But he did not get wages so he returned home. Then Newton took a brave step that changed his life. He Started Cultivating taro in 2009 using only 3 decimal cultivable land. Then he never had to look back. In the mean time, he joined in a CIG farmers group organized by National Agricultural Technology Program phase -2 (NATP-2) under Ministry of Agriculture established by Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE). In this group, he trained with new agriculture techniques that could help to increase crop yields. Then he started to establish demonstration of taro for more than one bigha of land under NATP-2 guided by DAE, Dumuria, Khulna. Agricultural training equipped Mr. Newton to see new ways forward for the farmers in her community. With great excitement, he started to put what he had learned into practice.

 

Now a Days farmer Newton Mondal earns tk 5-6 lakh every year through taro cultivation. He sells the taros online. The price of one taro which is about 10 feet long is tk 100. Newton Mondal is now a successful farmer of the country with the benefit of Digital Bangladesh. Presently he is processing for exporting raw taro in Korea. Upon the success of Newton Mondal, many people have begun cultivation taro from this year in Dumuria upazilla.

 

One time the Newton Mondal posted a picture of taro on facebook and set the price 100 tk for each taro. That’s how the Newton Mondal business started online. He delivered his customer by bkash payment. Last year, Newton Mondal sold 2 lakh taro saplings through online. His taro cultivation spreading in all over the country day by day. In the meantime, different satellite channels broadcast his success story of taro cultivation. As a result, now 8 to 10 farmers of the upazilla are cultivating taro.
